Open shelving in the kitchen

Have you noticed the trend to remove cabinet doors in the kitchen for opening shelving? I've loved several photos that I've seen, but it was Amy from All Things Home that really got my wheels turning on making it happen in my own kitchen! When you have darker cabinets this is a great solution to lighten things up.

I really had the perfect spot and could have easily done it long ago. I removed the doors from an upper cabinet which had very little stored in it and none of the items even related to my kitchen. I slid the doors under a bed so I can easily change back if I tire of the new look. But, I can't imagine tiring of it any time soon because I LOVE it!

Grain-Sack-Look Coffee Table Complete

Today, I sanded and waxed the grain-sack-look coffee table.

Sneak Peek!

I rarely show projects before I have them finished - in fact, I'm famous for not taking a single photo until it's finished - ha! But I just have to share a quick sneak peak.

My mother-in-law gave me a simple little oval coffee table quite some time ago. Now if you know me, you know that means that several other treasures have since come into our garage and covered up that coffee table. I've had an idea about how I wanted to paint the coffee table for a little bit now, but just hadn't found the energy to actually get to the table...until tonight.

I remembered that the table was a honey-oak color, I thought it had pretty shapely legs and I recalled some slight damage on the top. I pulled it out tonight and got to work.

I was right about the shapely legs and the little apron is cute too. I painted it one coat with Annie Sloan's Old Ochre.

Here's the fun part - I painted the top to look like a French grain sack. I used Annie Sloan's Graphite on the stencil and Annie Sloan's Duck Egg Blue on the stripes. I'll be honest, I didn't spend a lot of time measuring the stripes out - I figured a little imperfection would work for my grain sack look.

I still have to sand and wax so I'll share more pictures when I'm finished. Oh, and if you want your garage floor to look like mine - just paint lots and be a little messy : )

Chalk Paint Projects

Hi friends. In my last post I mentioned that I tried my homemade chalk paint on a chair that I had out in the garage.

This chair started out light blue. I painted it one coat with my homemade chalk paint which is a light sage green color. I sanded it to reveal some of the blue and then wiped it with a light brown glaze. It's nothing exciting, but it was a good candidate to test my paint.

We got home from a college baseball game tonight and I'm happy to report that my homemade chalk paint was still the consistency of paint - yea! I painted these two frames tonight.

I used the same chalk paint color but wiped with dark wax after sanding.

So, I still may use less Plaster of Paris next time but adding the water seems to have worked on this first batch. Have you tried to make your own homemade chalk paint yet?

UPDATE - Homemade Chalk Paint

When we got home from the movies tonight - saw This Means War which was hysterical - I got out my homemade chalk paint. Well, let's just say it was no longer the consistency of paint. My first thought was that I should use less Plaster of Paris. My second thought was that this recipe may require immediate use so mix only what you need when you are ready to paint.

I added quite a bit of water and painted a chair that I had in the garage. I noticed it getting thicker as I was painting. So...I'm still working on the perfect recipe. But, for now my advice would be to use less Plaster of Paris and don't mix it up until you are ready to paint. If it thickens as you paint just add a little water.

I'm determined to perfect this so I'll keep you posted!

Homemade Chalk Paint!

Okay, I've stopped my jumping for joy long enough to type this post. But I'm just so dang excited...more jumping for joy - because I JUST MADE HOMEMADE CHALK PAINT!!! I got the idea and recipe from Sherry at No Minimalist Here. Thank you Sherry!

There are a few versions of the recipe and I decided to try the Plaster of Paris - mainly because I knew I could find it easily and I'm impatient - ha! I bought the above supplies at Home Depot. The 4-pound container of Plaster of Paris was $6.78 (and it will last a long time). I bought the plastic container and lid for easy measuring and storing. I used 8oz. of Plaster of Paris and 16oz. of paint - oops paint that cost me $1. It's best to run a plastic fork or something thru the Plaster of Paris before adding the paint. I stirred well and added a little water. Stirred more and added a little more water. There were some small lumps and I thought it was going to be a disaster. I got a board and tested it out. The lumps just went away as I used the paint brush. It is remarkably similar to the expensive name brand chalk paint - the way it goes on, the way it dries, the way it sands - amazing.

The best part, of course, is the price but the second best part is the endless color possibilities! I'll be sure to share the results when I paint an entire piece with my homemade chalk paint!

Faux Fireplace

Hi friends. I didn't even notice until just now, but my last post was my 200th post! I think it will be giveaway time when I reach 100 Followers!

So, I swear I'm not on a mission to completely change our master bedroom but it just seems that all of my recent projects have been in that room. We have had a faux fireplace in our master for several years now. It's the kind where you can actually have a fire using gel cans. We have never actually had a fire in it but it's a nice addition to the room. I looked through tons of pictures and could not find a "before" shot for you but it was just a very plain, darkish brown wood. ***UPDATE: Mom just called and she found a before picture in this post.*** In fact, it was so boring that we added a scrolly wood applique shortly after we got it to dress it up a little.

I decided to paint it last week and I love how it turned out.

My first coat of paint was Annie Sloan's French Linen. My second coat was Annie Sloan's Old Ochre. I sanded and then used dark wax all over. I wanted the columns and the front facing to be a little different so I sanded those areas after applying the wax to get to the lighter color.

It almost looks like stone at certain angles.

Hi friends - two posts in one day - wow! A few weeks ago I bought some great burlap with black keys printed on it - found it at JoAnn. I have several solid wood chairs, but I didn't have one that had a cushion that I could re-cover. Well, today I found the perfect chair.

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite. The chair has great details:

A couple of changes in the master bedroom

I've shared a few updates in the master bedroom since I started this blog. Back in September of 2010, I showed you how I brought porch columns into the bedroom. In January of 2011, I revealed our new headboard and the addition of mirror to our dresser and night stands.

In September of 2011, I showed you my splurge - the storage cubes from Aidan Gray Home that I still just love, love, love. Then just in November I shared how I was using the giant tapestry above our bed. I bought this piece to sell and just wanted to use it for a little while.

Here are a couple more small changes:

I added curtain panels to the columns. I've had this idea for a while but just hadn't found the right panels. I knew I didn't want the panels to stick out very far and most of the ones I had come across would have been all bunched up due to the width. I used 15" metal plant brackets from Home Depot to hang these and they worked perfectly.

I also took the huge tapestry down and stenciled some burlap to hang in this frame that I already had. The burlap ties in with the burlap pillow on the bed and the burlap cushioned-tops on my storage cubes. I guess Riley likes the changes because she wouldn't budge off the bed for this picture to be taken.

Nothing major, but I love the changes! Hope your week is off to a great start!

Me...some metal bi-fold shutters.

I used pretty papers, ribbon, lace, buttons and jeweled florets.

Since they are metal, I got magnetic hooks and clips to hold pictures, post cards or reminders. I think these would be great for a craft room or girl's room!

A final touch in the laundry room

Back in October, I shared my freshly painted and updated laundry room. It felt so clean and crisp and I was super picky about what went back into the room. I've left one large wall bare all this time - nothing I had seemed worthy. I recently bought this great cabinet door with original glass and hardware from my friend Melissa. I added a little paint and hung it on that bare wall tonight.

The color of the glass looks perfect with my wall color - Ancient Marble by Sherwin Williams. I think it fills that wall nicely without being too overpowering. Thanks for my new (old) treasure Melissa!

A little vignette, way up high

We returned home on Sunday night after a weekend away. Who knows why, but at about 9:00pm I started making changes to the area above the armoir in our guest bedroom. I didn't take a "before" picture because the whole thing was unplanned. I guess it was about 10:30 when I decided I liked the changes.

I've had the arched window frame for awhile and had originally planned to use it above our bed in the master bedroom. It's very similar to one they have in the Wisteria catalog but mine was a quarter of the cost.

Here is one from farther away - see how high it is?

It felt good to spruce things up a bit because this poor room takes a lot of abuse. It holds lots of my merchandise and finished furniture pieces and usually looks like a storage locker!

He's tall and wide. Huge and strong. Aged to perfection - with so much character. He's a hunk y'all - of amazing metal! I feel so lucky to have scored this fabulous find today:

In order to get it in our garage I had to actually use the space. I even gave Hubby a shelf.

I think it would make a fabulous display for a store. Would look so cool as an entertainment center in a loft. And would be wonderful in a huge kitchen filled with stacks of white plates, white cake stands and white pitchers. Some day he'll be used to his full potential but for now I'll just smile every time I step foot in the garage.

A Craigslist Roadtrip

I purchased some items off of Craigslist and they had to be picked up in Itasca, Texas - that's about an hour-and-a-half from us. Mom agreed to make the Saturday roadtrip with me so we researched Antique Stores in that area. Our favorite stop was Red Horse Antique Mall in Cleburne, Texas. It was 3 floors and we came out of there with lots of treasures.

We traveled on to Rio Vista, Texas and had lunch at this cafe called Roughnecks. I didn't notice the population of Rio Vista, but I'm guessing about a fourth of them were at this place for lunch.

And it wasn't because it was the only place in town - check out my lunch:

My iced tea was served in jar - just the way it should be.

One of the things I love about Texas is that you can take off in any direction and hit small town after small town - most with old Main Streets or Squares lined with Antique Stores.

Let the Winter Projects begin!

Now that I am past Thanksgiving, shopping, wrapping, more shopping, more wrapping, family vacation, more shopping, more wrapping and Christmas...I'm so ready for some projects! I don't think I had a paint brush in my hand for about 5 weeks!

My projects tend to change a bit during the winter. I do more small projects indoors. Here are a couple that I completed once the Christmas tree and decorations were put back in the attic:

I got this cutting board from an Estate Sale and it had been lovingly used the perfect amount. I added the French stencil and ribbon. I'm planning to sell it, but I sure do like it.

I also FINALLY tried a coffee filter wreath. I referred back to a couple of great tutorials and practiced on a small one.

The wreath forms that I had were the flat kind and I think a rounded one would work better. I got my coffee filters at Dollar General - this is a very inexpensive project. I plan to make more - I'd like to try a large one as well as one using the brown filters.

A Vintage Christmas Mantle

Hi friends! Is it just me or is time flying by at record speed?!

I finally got around to getting our stockings out of the attic and decorating the mantle. Y'all know I'm not a big seasonal decorator, but I enjoyed added some vintage charm to our mantle this year.

I have these two old jars and it just so happens that one has a green lid and one has a red lid!

I love these two vintage-inspired ornaments. I got them a couple of years ago for 75% off after Christmas.

I even used my antique bread pan and added a couple of vintage Christmas prints with magnets.

I also used my two old spools because I have a red one and green one.

Our stocking holders spell out "PEACE". I splurged on our stockings and holders (Pottery Barn) ten years ago but I always put them back in the plastic and they still look brand new.

Our tree is yet to come - we always buy a live one.

Almost Show Time!

Mom and I are feverishly working to get ready for our show this weekend - Buchanan's Vintage Market in Lewisville. I have a few completed projects to share.

You might remember this post where I shared a coffee table I was eager to paint. Here she is all ready for her debut:

I don't usually photograph tables on the bed in our guest bedroom, however the floor is currently COVERED with merchandise and Christmas decorations for the show.

Here is another little table that I just completed.

This was my first time to stencil with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and I LOVED it for this application!

And then an easy-peasy ornament project - this one is great to do with kids because it's no fuss.

All you need is some thin cardboard pieces, pretty papers, ribbon, small jingle bells, scissors and glue. Of course there are a million and one ways to decorate these - let your kids go crazy!

So, I decided to hang the ginormous tapestry above our bed in the master bedroom. See what you think:

It is wider than our headboard. I'm sure that breaks some rule of design - you know the one - thou shalt not have artwork above thine bed that extends beyond thine bed - or something like that. But, despite this rule-breaking, I think I might like it.

Hi friends. I hope you have all enjoyed your weekend! I wanted to share a new treasure with you:

I got this fabulous framed tapestry at a sale on Saturday. It is ginormous - just shy of 33x75! I'm not usually drawn to these, but this one has such great muted colors and the scene is pretty too - castles and ladies in beautiful dresses.

I originally planned to sell it, but the more I look at it the more I like it. And I'm thinking it might look nice in the master bedroom. I'll keep you posted on this one!

Creativity - how does it happen for you?

I'm fascinated (and jealous) of truly creative people. That's why I love to follow so many blogs - the creativity and inspiration out there is just incredible.

I get in a crafty mood from time to time - especially in the winter months when we spend more time at home. I wouldn't classify myself as creative but every once in awhile I'll get a little spurt of creative energy.

This weekend I was baffled by how creativity happens for me. I'm always buying things that I think might turn into a project someday. I bought a neat cabinet door from a Habitat store months ago. I had no idea what I was going to do with it. I've seen that cabinet door in the garage many times but never paid any attention to it. So, I see the cabinet door this weekend and suddenly I just had to do something with it - like RIGHT THEN. (At this point I'm hoping that someone out there is saying "yes, that happens to me too!")

So the next thing I know I'm drilling holes, painting, staining, sanding, stenciling and hot gluing. Hubby walks by and says, "oh, when did you decide to do that?" And I respond "um, I didn't decide anything - it just came to me and I HAD to do it." It's not as if I was looking for a project. I didn't walk out in the garage out of boredom and hope that something jumped out at me.

This isn't about my end-result - because really it's nothing special - but more about the creative process. What is it that sparks our creativity - time, energy, other creative people? Can we foster our creativity - allow it to happen more often? I'm dying to see what my creative blog friends have to say about this!

Updates to the Laundry Room

Our laundry room is basically a long narrow hallway that leads from the garage to the kitchen (very difficult to photograph long, narrow spaces).

A few years ago we added beadboard to the wall along one side. Our dog's crate took up one big corner in the space. We couldn't add the beadboard where her crate was because it literally wouldn't fit - her crate really didn't fit either but we sort of forced it - as in had to remove the baseboard to get it in! So, a year or so ago our dog suddenly decides she no longer wants to spend her days in the crate which she previously loved.

I finally moved the crate out and called in my beloved painter to add beadboard in that corner. And since he was coming could he please paint the beadboard and the walls. I went with Sherwin Williams Ancient Marble on the walls and I LOVE it. These pictures don't do the color justice.

You may recognize what is now occupying that corner. Remember the great typewriter stand from this post?

The room is lighter and brighter. I really wanted to keep it simple so a bunch of my previous decor didn't go back into the space.

Now, if you are looking at these pictures and thinking to yourself "it looks pretty full of decor if you ask me" - just take a look at all the items that didn't make the cut:

Yes, I have enough to outfit a couple more laundry rooms!

Isn't it amazing how clean spaces feel with a fresh coat of paint? I'm loving my updated laundry room!

It all began with a fifty-cent purchase

A few weeks ago I picked up this old book at a garage sale for fifty-cents. The cover was missing and I didn't even look inside to see the title. I bought it with plans to make a book-page wreath.

I pulled the book out last night because I needed a few book pages for a little project I was working on. I opened it up and saw this:

I know it's hard to read - it says HOMES OF AMERICAN AUTHORS, DATED 1854.

It includes chapters on authors such as Bryant, Emerson, Longfellow, Hawthorne and many more. The most amazing part is that the book has illustrations of the breathtaking homes!

These pages are on a thicker paper and show their age beautifully.

I wanted to make some type of art using these illustrations and I came up with this:

I embellished the corners of the old window with these half-spindles that I painted:

I'm trying to decide if I might want to embellish further - perhaps with antique lace and buttons...I'll keep you posted!

Random Cuteness

Those of you who know me know how much I adore our dog, Riley. She truly brings such joy to each day! She has some quirky habits - even more so with age. One is that she is rarely without one of her stuffed animals. I thought I'd share a couple of pictures so you can see the cuteness for yourself.

She loves to use her stuffed animals as pillows.

And they are good to have around at naptime.

I know it's hard to tell from these pictures but she is actually a great bird dog. She is a Vizsla for those wondering - a fantastic breed. Riley is 7 years old and the whole family is crazy about her. Son #1 will be college-bound in the Fall and he already talks about how much he is going to miss her!

We are overloaded with wall decor at our booth in Grapevine Antique Mall! I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago. Some of these items have already sold but more treasures have taken their place!

I love the Cottage Home sign. The Tea Room sign has sold.

We've got some great shabby floral prints.

The large mirror has sold but it's been replaced with another great mirror.

Fall Mantle

Well, it is officially Fall although we are still reaching the 90s here in the Lone Star State! I've shared before that I am not a big seasonal decorator. But, I love the idea of seasonal changes and always enjoy seeing what other bloggers are creating in their homes.

I got these great pumkins on sale at Target (Smith & Hawken).

Behind the sugar mold I put a couple of the placemats that I ordered last year from Nell Hill's.

I found this awesome old galvanized feeder this week. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with it. I looked at it from every angle, flipped the doors, studied it, brainstormed on a walk with my mom and thought about it some more. I finally decided it would be wonderful for seasonal decorating!

I attached the ribbon and bow with strong magnets so they can easily be changed out. I pushed the feeder door in and filled it with a pumpkin, a gourd and other great Fall decor.

The feeder is made to hang on the wall. I'm thinking it would be wonderful on a covered porch! And I already have so many ideas for how it could be used at Christmastime!

Back in June, I shared this gorgeous storage cube that I completely fell in love with from Aidan Gray Home. I did some research and found that Gray Living on the square in McKinney sells items from the Aidan Gray Home line. I ordered two of them to go at the end of our bed in the master bedroom. (This was quite a splurge so Hubby and I decided it could be my anniversary gift - 10 years this month!). I got the call this week that they were in and I picked them up today!

I love them even more than I thought I would - it's as if they were designed specifically for our bedding!

In the catalog, I wasn't crazy about the rope handles. Turns out even that part is perfect - look how well it matches the trim on our comforter:

Grain Sack-Look in the Kitchen

I was catching up on some of my favorite blogs this morning and I came across Honey's post over at 2805. I was instantly in love with the grain sack-look kitchen towels that she shared! They match my kitchen perfectly. I called our closest Target and they didn't have any in stock and mentioned something about discontinued...what?! I called the next closest Target and they had four...oh, sweet success! I had them hold two for me at Guest Services and I picked them up tonight.

So, I bring them home (all giddy of course) and started trying to fold them. The placement of the print makes them difficult to fold. I had them laying out flat on the island and I happened to notice that I could put them back-to-back and create a great runner! And just look at how they match my Dash and Albert rug!

Now, I know my mom just looked at this picture and said outloud "oh my goodness she didn't even iron those first". I know, I know - I was just trying it out for size. I'll have to iron and sew and you know make it perfect.

What I've been working on

Well, I've been bad about posting my projects lately so I'll just throw a bunch of recent ones out there all at once.

I painted this tri-fold screen for a client. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old Ochre.

Here is a close-up that shows how well the chalk paint sands - I applied wax as well.

I loved the size and look of this piece but decided it needed to be bright white.

I painted this great bench for my in-laws.

This is the first piece that I have used the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and followed-it with stain.

This little cupboard was also done with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint wiped with stain. It has already sold!

I've been getting to paint a lot of different things which is nice! Hope you guys have had a wonderful weekend!

Sale at Red Shed Antiques!

We hit the Saturday Sale at Red Shed Antiques in Grapevine this morning. They opened up bright and early at 8:00am and there was a line of anxious women waiting at the door!

They had so many wonderful things and lots of French items which you know I adore!

The Red Shed ladies are gifted in the art of display and they create beautiful vignettes.

And the icing on our antique, shabby cake was that we purchased the new issue of Flea Market Style!

Vintage Industrial

Vintage Industrial (Gina - did I get your attention?) is everywhere these days. Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and all over blogland. I must admit I love the look. If you've been following my blog for long you know that I added a fantastic antique Lineberry furniture cart to my living room earlier this year. There's just something about the metal and wood together...which is why I was so thrilled to find this treasure this week:

A wonderful old typing stand but with a wood top!

The design of the legs and casters is awesome. There is a lever and when released the legs are stationary on the ground. When you push the lever the casters lower and it rolls freely.

I just love the wood and metal combination. I stained the top (it was in sad shape) but left the vintage metal completely as I found it. Do you love this look as much as I do?

Something adorable in our fridge!

Hubby and Son #1 both love boiled eggs. I'll boil 5-6 at a time and wrap them individually in saran wrap so they can take them on the go. I came across this in a shop the other day and had to have it.

I boiled some eggs tonight and loved having a special place for them in the fridge.

I know I'm silly, but sometimes the smallest things bring me such joy!

The Help

I took my mom to see The Help and we both loved it. You'll laugh and cry. You'll feel mad, sad and glad.

In addition to the moving story you'll also enjoy seeing the gorgeous Southern homes - inside and out. Oh the porches! And as a personal side note - I love, love the car that Stuart drives off in when he leaves Skeeter. And the Southern cooking on display - my goodness you'll wish you could pull up a chair!

Moved in at Lonestar Antique Mall!

Last Saturday & Sunday mom and I got all moved in to our new space at Lonestar Antique Mall in Haltom City.

These pictures were taken on Saturday and it actually changed quite a bit after our work on Sunday.

We already sold one set of shutters, but we still have the ones shown in this photo.

We are so excited to be joining other great vendors and blog friends like Denis of Ruby Grace's and Gina of 3 Ring Cottage!

A little burst of craft energy

Typically my craft projects are completed in the winter - when the days are short and we spend more time indoors. But I just completed a small craft project that went like this:

I stopped at a garage sale on my way to work one recent Friday morning and bought these notecards -cute right?

Each package contained 10 blank notecards and they were $0.10 each. At the time I really just thought I might use them - I do send lots of handwritten notes - something we should all do more of, but I digress...

So, later that same weekend I was cleaning up my work area in the garage. I came across a stack of three unfinished wood plaques that I had picked up at a garage sale several months ago. The second I saw them the project came to me. I have to admit that this doesn't happen to me as often as I wish it did - much of my "creativity" is copied.

I painted each plaque with one coat of Kilz and two coats of black paint. Then I glued the notecard (top half only) to the plaque using Mod Podge. I wiped it all down with wipe-on poly because I wanted it to be shiny. Then I added a ribbon for hanging to each one - the ribbon is from Hobby Lobby and I loved that it had a little bling.

So that's it - I hope they will add some fun to a girl's room!

We just returned from several days in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for Son #2's baseball world series. We had a wonderful trip - the boys did awesome in the tournament, perfect weather, beautiful scenery, fun activities and great meals.

This was taken on a hike at Fish Creek Falls.

Steamboat Springs is a very active community. There are endless opportunities for outdoor activities - hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, etc. There are hot springs, a rodeo and a Farmer's Market on Saturdays.

This is what the ski slopes look like in the summer.

On the way home we drove through Winter Park and saw the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The spray off this waterfall was a treat after the long hike.

It's fun to travel, but I'm always so happy to see the roadside sign that says "Welcome to Texas"!

A new love

I never thought I'd say I found my new love online...well sortof. It was actually a listing on Craigslist for an antique backplate - like off of a buffet or sideboard. Bad news - it was in Greenville, TX which is about an hour-and-a-half away. Good news - it was at a store so I was able to call and give my credit card number to hold it. Sweet! I did not take a "before" picture but it was so sad - dirty, dry and dull. I just knew it could be made beautiful again and honestly, it turned out better than I expected.

I hung it in our master bathroom - above the double doors that lead to our closet.

Here is a zoomed out shot so you can see how it complements the antique frame that hangs above our garden tub.

Another new-old treasure...love it!

Buchanan's - Day Two

We had another great day at Buchanan's Antique Market in Lewisville. We plan to be back there in November so stay tuned for details!

Today was not quite as busy and I was able to spend some time checking out the other vendors. There was a great selection of merchandise and I got a few treasures to bring home.

Buchanan's Antique Market

Today was our first day of Buchanan's Antique Market and their first day at a new loaction in Lewisville. Buchanan's has been in Fair Park and Market Hall for many years and we hoped they would have a following. Well, they must because both the vendor and shopper turnout was GREAT!

The vendors from the Old Red Lumberyard were all set-up together and it was so fun. Here are some pictures from our booths:

Lone Star Antique Mall & a finished project

I've had it on my list to visit Lone Star Antique Mall in Haltom City for some time now. I had heard great things about it and knew that I could find Ruby Grace's there as well. My boys had lots of baseball this weekend, but mom and I were able to check out the mall on Sunday afternoon. Here are a few pictures of some of our favorite booths:

We saw more architectural pieces and primitives than we've seen locally in quite some time.

Also on Sunday evening I finished up a client project:

I used two Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors and my combo wax. I couldn't resist putting some white platters and plates in it - LOVE!

The Old Red Lumberyard Junk Market July sale will not be held in McKinney. It seems the City needs some changes to be made to the Lumberyard - probably because it's become so popular!

Have no fear - the sale will go on - and in air-conditioning! You can find all of your favorite vendors at Buchanan's Antique Market in Lewisville. Lake Pointe Shopping Center located at 2640 S. Stemmons Freeway (I-35) - NE Corner of Access Road (previously Best Buy). You can shop in air-conditioned comfort on Saturday, July 16th from 9:00-5:00 and on Sunday, July 17th from 11:00-5:00. The cost of admission is $5 - good for both days. There will be more vendors than just the Lumberyard regulars - 150+ vendors!

A thrifting we will go

I was able to hit two of my regular thrift store stops this week and wound up with a couple of treasures. I'm always primarily in search of furniture but this week's finds were different.

I got these two great shabby framed floral prints. I toned down the gold on the frames with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old Ochre. These measure approximately 19x22.

I also found this great frame - it measures 11x13.

I toned down the gold on this one as well. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey and then used the dark wax. I'm planning to sell the frame, but I must admit I didn't put a price tag on it yet - that sometimes leads to items finding a spot in my home!

Mom and I were lucky enough to purchase four of these treasures. I decided I couldn't part with mine and it took up residency in our living room. It's a ton of work to bring them back to life - we keep them authentic - no changing out of boards or hardware. We just sand and stain and put a fresh coat on all of the metal. We also do not work on the lettering at all - we feel the authentic piece which shows it's age is best. Mom sold her first cart before the stain had even dried! The buyer uses it as a coffee table and it looks fantastic in his loft.

If you've been dying to own one of these and you live anywhere near the DFW Metroplex - YOU ARE IN LUCK - because mom just finished another cart and it's available for purchase!

The Palmetto State

Happy 4th of July friends! Hubby and I just returned from a weekend getaway to South Carolina. We stayed in Myrtle Beach, did some saltwater fishing and spent a wonderful day in Charleston (get ready for lots of pics).

Here is the view from our balcony:

Myrtle Beach was a little insane with the Holiday weekend. It reminded me of Spring Break but with more families mixed in. It was more of a tourist destination than we had expected.

We adored the sweet Southern accents of the friendly South Carolinians and I secretly loved that when you ordered iced tea they assumed sweet tea. Every menu that we had during our stay included shrimp and grits - gotta love it.

On Sunday we escaped the beach madness and spent the day in Charleston. On the way there we stopped at a roadside stand and met a gentle soul, Laverne, who weaves Sweet Grass baskets - passed down from her grandmother - I had to have one!

Also on the way we stopped in Georgetown and McClennanville and Hubby endured my historical and southern house stalking...

Love the covered porches, shutters and rocking chairs!

This one was new construction, but didn't they do a fabulous job preserving the historical details?

This one was in Charleston and I loved the palm tree!

I could have stayed a week in Charleston! So rich in history and amazing architecture. Here are a few of my favorite shots from around historic downtown:

I'm not a great photographer - I don't have an expensive camera or special lenses and I don't edit my photos. I hope that even from these mediocre photos you can tell how amazing Charleston is - add it to your Bucket List - really.

Another Table Re-Do

This is another great table that my mother-in-law gave me. It was painted white when it came to me and was not in the greatest shape. It was purchased from an auction with intentions of being repainted. I just the love the details - especially those little spindles!

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Chateau Grey. I sanded and then used my homemade combo wax - regular Minwax paste wax mixed with Annie Sloan dark wax. Those 4 blank rectangles (at 12, 3, 6 and 9 like a clock-face) were just calling out to me for something so I added the fleur dis lis. I sanded those and wiped again with the combo wax (yes, I've officially named it that).

So...even though I adore this table, I'm a huge fan of the fleur dis lis, and it matches my home - I'm still selling it!

Good Table Made Better

My mother-in-law recently gave me this table that she was no longer using. I've always liked it because it's a nice size and has some great detail. I decided to leave the top alone but painted the rest of the table with my new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey.

I sanded it quite a bit - I just love how the chalk paint sands! Here is a close-up of the great detail on the apron:

I just love the feeling of a finished project!

Metal & Awesome (but what is it)?

I bought this awesome piece at a "Vintage Sale" (a yard sale with cool stuff but not dirt cheap prices) on Sunday.

It's heavy and the base has holes in the corners for bolts. My plan is to bolt it to a cedar beam to make it taller and use it for hanging baskets.

It's old - do you know what it was used for originally?

Hats off to both the shoppers and the vendors of the Old Red Lumberyard - it was so dang hot! Despite the soaring temps, there were more vendors set-up than ever before. This sale has tripled in size since I first discovered it!

The City doesn't allow the pop-up style tents so everyone uses these market umbrellas which I think just adds to the charm.

Here is a shot of our space - we got so many comments on our blue beach umbrellas!

We will not have this space next month. These spaces are taken by permanent vendors and they can leave their merchandise in the storage area after the sale - major perk. Many of the vendors go all out and really make their space feel like a shop. If you haven't made it out yet it's a must see! Also, there is a great new shop across the street called Fringe that is only open in conjunction with the Old Red Lumberyard sale.

Side Table - Before & After

Hi friends! I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful weekend! It's hot here in Texas!

I picked up this table on Friday and thought it had potential. I decided I would use my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint before I even got it out of the store.

Lately, I've been using two colors on many of my pieces. This table presented a great opportunity to use two colors.

I loved the unusual base on this table.

The two Annie Sloan colors are Old Ochre and Duck Egg. I would really like to order some Annie Sloan in Paris Gray as well.

What other Annie Sloan colors do you recommend?

REVIEW - Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

After reading the many wonderful reviews and watching a couple of great video tutorials on Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, I just had to place an order! I purchased two colors - Duck Egg and Old Ochre. I also purchased the dark wax and a special wax brush.

I'm not gonna lie - the price tag (including shipping) had me second guessing my decision to try it! I must admit though - I was giddy when the package arrived at my front door!

I have painted four pieces so far.

I will echo must of the points made by other bloggers: no primer is required, it dries incredibly fast, it goes on great with both brush and roller, it sands remarkably well, the colors can be altered pretty drastically with wax, it cleans up easily and it thickens if the lid is left off.

I did not, however, find that it goes farther than latex paint as many others have stated.

Now on to the wax. The dark wax is very soft - it looks almost like pudding. The instructions on the can say to use a clear wax first and then to apply the dark wax. Now, I'm actually pretty anal - a planner - a rule follower - but I just simply cannot take the time to apply clear and then dark wax on all of my pieces. So I turned the directions around out of sight and just applied that dark wax right on top of the paint. (I love the wax brush by the way). I wiped it off with a clean soft cloth and was shocked at the color change.

It turned the Duck Egg blue this great green color. I love the options that exist with just one color. But, I also really liked the blue color and knew the straight dark wax couldn't be used on everything.

So, my next experiment was to mix plain Minwax clear wax with a little of the dark wax. I used an airtight tupperware- type container so it would keep.

This was the ticket my friends! It's econmical and it worked like a charm!

Overall, I ADORE this paint! I must say that nothing gives you the aged-look quite as well. It will be my go to choice for any piece that has a lot of poly, any surface that is not solid wood...basically opportunities to skip the primer step. But, I won't be throwing out my latex paints just yet...

I am loving the French-look of this coffee table. It is long - almost 53". I actually think it would be fantastic at the end of a bed!

Mom has FAR MORE inventory and we will have lots of great things. We even have some special items from my brother in Arkansas. It's last minute and we are scrambling a bit but it will be worth the drive - come see us!

Grapevine Antique Mall - Grapevine, Texas

I did a post on the Grapevine Antique Mall when I first started my blog. Mom has had a couple of booths in the mall for quite some time now. In March, she had the opportunity to take a third booth within the mall. Since my requests for her to take my items to the mall and try to sell them seem to be ever-increasing, I decided to split the new booth with her. I'd really like to do more in the way of displays and maybe bring in some larger architectural items. I also love lots of texture and I'd like to find ways to incorporate more in the space. So, it's a major work in progress but here are a few pictures:

This hangs from the ceiling and mom sells bunches of dried hydrangeas.

We have an area that is cottage/beach themed.

We have a section that is French-inspired.

We have these awesome trunks that belong to my brother.

We have no shortage of wall decor.

And we have ~~too many~~ lots of chairs.

Goodwill Treasures!

I had a string of visits to Goodwill that didn't produce much, but last week made up for all of it! I'm only sharing one find tonight but I'll show you the rest as I work on it. I braved going in on 1/2 Price Day and found this great chair:

I removed the plastic cover from the seat, painted and sanded. Isn't she cute?

Lancome Definicils Mascara in Black.

I've used this mascara for almost 20 years. Every once in awhile I'll try something new - usually in an effort to save money - it never works out. Definicils is the BEST!

Fried Okra

Of course my favorite is my mom's, but I've found a couple of fast food restaurants that have pretty good fried okra - yum!

Bobbi Brown lipstick in Brownie.

I used to carry lots of lipstick colors in my purse - I had one for when I wore orange, pink, red, brown, etc. I went in search of ONE lipstick that I could wear with everything. I found it! This is now the ONLY lipstick I carry in my purse.

Painted, Sealed & Delivered!

I just completed a job for my client. I'm sorry to say I don't have a "before" picture! This little table and the mirror that attaches were stained dark. The table top had a large hole in each corner - no longer needed so I filled the holes. The table was cute but had no detail, no drawer, etc.

I love how she turned out - take a look:

I painted it a light blue with hints of gray. I saw an opportunity to show off the only real detail the table had and painted the rectangular section light gray with a dark gray outline. I then added the beautiful glass knobs to make it look like a drawer and well...just for some bling!

I love the size of this piece and did you notice the two areas for decorating - love that lower shelf!

Goodwill Finds

There are about 4 thrift stores that are close to my office and I try to hit a couple a week on lunch hours if I can. I haven't been finding much on my stops at Goodwill lately. Last week I finally found a couple of things.

I found this oval framed picture. I failed to take a "before" photo but it was just a standard gold frame. I thought the roses were perfect for a more shabby look so I painted the frame. You can tell from the nails on the back and the wire hanger that the frame is old.

I also found this cute white-washed basket. I added a little stamped embellishment to dress it up.

Maybe I'll find more treasures this week! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Chair Update

I picked up this chair at a thrift store. I think I'm correct in calling it a barrel-back chair. Designers out there - feel free to correct me!

I loved the stitched detailing on the seat-back.

I wanted to update the look so I first painted it a light gray with just a hint of blue. I felt it needed something more so I used my antique pewter kit.

Here is a close-up that shows how the imperfections in the wood picked up the antique pewter treatment.

I also cleaned and treated the leather. I think this chair that once looked made for an office now looks made for a chic room!

Mother's Day Getaway

Mom and I left Saturday morning for a Mother's Day getaway to Granbury. We stayed at the Inn on Lake Granbury and shopped the square and beyond. Here are two photos from the Bed & Breakfast:

I was so thankful for the beautiful weather!

I had planned to take photos of many of the historical homes around downtown Granbury, but somehow I only managed to get this one:

We shopped a roadside sale, a huge garage sale benefitting an animal shelter, the Square in Granbury and a couple of places just off the square. Our favorite shopping spot was Witherspoon's Antique Mall which is a couple of blocks off the square. I got some awesome treasures - take a look:

These fabulous old corbels that had old peeling paint the perfect color for our kitchen.

I found this great pitcher at a roadside sale and got it for just $5! It's large - just shy of 13" tall.

I got the large basket/tray shown in this photo from a garage sale for only $2! It's up really high so it's hard to tell just how large it really is. If you've been reading my blog for long you already know I have a thing for baskets.

This was by far my favorite find of the trip - heck of the year!

This awesome sign is 60" wide. I hung it in our living room - here is a shot from a distance:

St. Francis

I've been wanting a St. Francis statue for a while now. I hoped to find one that was conrete so I could find a great place for it outside. I found one at Home Goods a couple of weeks ago - it was concrete and was a great price, but it was much larger than I had envisioned. I decided against it and then went back frantically the next day to buy it - it was gone. I had severe walk-away remorse!

I ran into Home Goods this evening to purchase a gift card. And guess what...

I'm now so glad I passed on the concrete one. This one is cast iron - so HEAVY! I love the brown and turquoise colors.

The little card that came with him says St. Francis of Assisi - the Patron Saint of Animals. I'll find the perfect outside home for him this weekend!

Three-Quarter Bed

I've had this bed to paint for a client for quite awhile now. Lack of time has kept me from working on it. Besides that I wasn't sure how I wanted to complete it - I wasn't "feeling" any of my ideas, but then it came to me...

Here is how the bed looked upon delivery:

It must have been stored somehwere hot - like an attic or barn - because the top coat was peeling badly.

Here is a picture after lots of sanding and primer:

And here she is after a couple coats of paint and wipe-on poly:

The color is a bit deceiving in this photo - the inside design is painted a very light gray (double-click photo to enlarge).

I love how it turned out and think this bed could be the start to an absolutely gorgeous guest bedroom! I looked online and found a source for 3/4 mattresses. And I think this wonderful bedding offered by Full Bloom Cottage would complete the look:

Our final stop on Friday was Pandora's Box Antiques in Frankston, TX.

This store has something for everyone. They had lots of windows, doors, columns, mantels and corbels - all of which I love.

This was my favorite purchase from Pandora's Box - I hung it above the door leading to the master bathroom.

Eastward Travels - Second Stop

We left Canton and headed towards Frankston. Along the way, on a small two-lane road, we came upon this:

The small pillars came off of a balcony. I love the large column section - I'm picturing a huge fern in there. And mom got some awesome shutters and a great antique chair. My little car was loaded up!

Eastward Travels - First Stop

Happy Friday! I had the day off so we hit the road and headed East. Our first stop was Laurie Anna's in Canton. Laurie Anna's never disappoints - see my previous post about her shoppe here - I took more photos of her gorgeous shoppe today. ENJOY!

Garden Cherub

Today my lunch errand was to get Hubby coffee for his Keurig at Bed Bath & Beyond. As a side note, I usually get 4 boxes and get to use two $5 off coupons - this is the way to go! So, that store just happens to be right next to TJ Maxx and I just happened to have a gift card. A quick look at my watch - yep there is time if I sprint.

I passed the bright Spring handbags, covered my eyes as I went by the shoes and skidded into the home section. I grabbed this darling concrete cherub for $7.99!

And look at that cute little cherub butt.

I thought he looked comfy in my little bed with knockout roses. I planted these to help hide the meter. And who knows - maybe the meter reader will feel blessed now.

And since I was outside I took another picture of these flowers - look how much they have grown!

Spring has sprung!

Hi friends! We've been having some crazy Spring storms - three hail storms in the last two weeks! My flowers love the rain but could do without the hail. Here are a few more Spring flower pictures from around our home.
Our patriotic petunias. My 13-year-old loves to point out that these are purple rather than blue.

Our biggie-size geraniums. Wouldn't it be awesome if they had drive-thru flower barns - like the drive-thru beverage barns? You could just place your order, pop your trunk and be on your way.

This old chair is more impressive than the pot of flowers sitting in it.

And more petunias - my youngest son's baseball team sold flats of flowers this Spring - I have never planted so many petunias - ha!

Thrift Store Makeovers

I hit some thrift stores on a couple of my lunch hours this week. First up, I found this large framed picture at Goodwill.

It's large - measuring approximately 21x29 including the frame. I had already done some painting on the frame when I took this picture.

I dediced my authentic potato sack would be more fun than the sunflower canvas.

Next, I found these five mini terra cotta pots. They were stacked up, taped and sold all together. I added some green paint around the rims and then added a small piece of light green burlap stamped with a flower. I think they are sweet and Springy.

Hope it's been a great week so far - the weekend is almost here!

Antique Mirror Love

I love antique mirrors and I've come across some great ones recently.

These mirrors are hanging in the guest bedroom. I've had the upper one for awhile but I found the lower one just last week - and get this - it was only $7.00!! They are both backed with felt and I hung them using a plate hanger.

Here is another look from a distance.

This mirror rests on the garden tub in the master bath. I assume it came off an old dresser.

This antique mirror was also purchased last week and it hangs in our water closet. I had a different mirror hanging here but it was on loan from my mom. I love this one and it fits the space perfectly.

The last couple of benches

I finished the last two benches for my client. I painted a dozen of these and I really enjoyed making them all different.

New Rug!

As a follow-up to this post - I ordered the Dash and Albert rug for my breakfast area! I just loved the idea of having one rug for Fall/Winter and another for Spring/Summer. My Fall/Winter rug is roughly 5x8 and the new rug is 6x9. I like the larger size because the chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. Take a look:

It brings a feeling of change to the kitchen and I like it!

Signs of Spring

I love Spring & Summer! The past two weekends I've done yard work and planted flowers. Here are a few signs of Spring from our home.

I got two of these large hanging baskets from a roadside farmer's market in Oklahoma.

These great concrete urns were a garage sale find last year.

It's a good thing I took these pictures before the Spring storm we had last night. Right now our entire yard is covered in oak leaves and even a few large branches - it was a doozie. Hopefully my flowers will survive the hail.

A pinch of this and a smidge of that

No, I haven't been baking - that title is just a hint that this post is random. See, I've mentioned that it's baseball season and our schedule gets...well, pretty CRAZY for a few months. I still want to be creative, but with little time it ends up being a quick project here and there.

I found this homemade wooden tool box at a thrift store and turned it in to this:

I did kind of a reverse stencil and then wiped stain on after the paint dried.

I updated these topiaries with a simple swatch of stamped burlap:

And I changed the look of my old sugar mold (purchased in Canton years ago) by adding burlap ribbon and a fleur dis lis magnet:

Lastly, I turned this fence board into a cute sign:

I've also been doing lots of yard work and planting. I'll share some signs of Spring soon. Hope you are all having a great week!

Snug as a bug in a rug

The majority of our home is difficult to place into any certain "style" category. The kitchen is the exception - it is very much French Country. Here is a picture of our breakfast area - notice the current rug.

I've been thinking I might like to lighten things up a bit and get a rug that looks like French ticking. I found this Dash and Albert rug:
